WITH all the recent talk about potential power outages around the country, it is essential that you understand what you need if you are left without power. Everyone’s needs will be unique. However, Energy Victoria provides useful tips that can help you be prepared for an outage.

1. List phone numbers for important contacts you may need during an outage and keep this somewhere safe and accessible. To report a power outage, refer to the Faults and Emergencies number from your most recent power bill

2. Create a power outage safety kit, including alternative lighting such as a torch, a battery powered radio to receive updates, alternative cooking and heating facilities, a charged phone or landline, and access to alternative fresh water, if you use electricity to run a water pump

3. For power dependent customers, such as those on life support or with certain health conditions, discuss your needs with your electrical retailer or ensure the company registers your needs with your current contact details

4. Sign up to receive text notifications from your electricity distributor to stay updated with faults or planned maintenance.
